Introduction to Silas Marner (1861)
Today we will talk about another famous novel by George Eliot, which is called Silas Marner. Now friends, before we dive into the story, let's quickly look at some important facts. This work gives us a realistic picture of the Victorian age. It has been written from a third person point of view. It is a story of a cloth weaver. This person changes or transforms from a lonely, miser or conduce to a very beloved father.
Section 1: The Backstory
So moving on to the story now, the story starts from 1800 when people used to work as weavers and it was very common. They used to go to each and every village for weaving. Now rural villagers were orthodox, so they used to develop negative assumptions for the things they did not like. If someone had special skills or intelligence, it meant that the person was under a control of evil forces. People used to look down on the weavers. There was a rural weaver, Silas Marner. His neighbors did not trust him and used to doubt him. He used to stay in Raveloe's Border near a stone pit where his cottage was. He used to stay alone and did not socialize with people a lot. He used to stay and work alone. People used to think he's strange because he used to stay alone because of his past. So there is a story behind it. When he was young, he used to stay in a place called Lantern Yard. There people used to trust him a lot. He was so close to God and a very religious person he was. So this was his identity when he used to stay there. But a friend of his convicted him as a thief and destroyed his reputation. People wanted to kill him and said if he's right, God will save him. So Silas had lost his faith and innocence and ran away from there and started living in Raveloe for 15 years. Now people do not know anything about his story, so they have their own assumptions about him. He stays out of the community, but he makes a lot of money from his skill of weaving. He makes his living and saves a lot. For his work, people give him gold coins, which he loves very much. He now earns gold coins and gathers them and puts all his gold in his house's basement. He thinks of it as his treasure. Every night he counts his gold. In fact, friends, the place gold has in his heart, no one can take that place. And friends, Silas's mana has cut all ties from the world, but gold is the main aim of his life.
Section 2: Godfrey and Dunstan
Now friends, the story progresses. There's a guy named Squire Cass in the village. He has a very good reputation. He's very popular in the community. But his elder son, Godfrey, married a lower-class woman named Molly. He also has a daughter, but he has kept his marriage a secret. He did not even tell his father. But his younger brother, Dunstan, knows this. Godfrey himself regrets this marriage and wants to marry a respectable young woman named Nancy. But he does not have any option. Godfrey gives a lot of money to Dunstan, his younger brother. He even gave all his rent income from his father's tenants. Dunstan has alcohol and gambling addiction. So, guys, why does Godfrey give him all the money? So that Dunstan keeps Godfrey's secret safe. He had given all his money and has no money now. So now he tells Dunstan to sell Godfrey's horse named Wildfire and asks him to tell no one about it. But if you do some nonsense from Dunstan, the horse dies. So now he decides to go back to his house. And while coming back to his house, Dunstan sees Silas Marner's cottage. He thinks that he will talk to that weaver to loan him some money. So, when he goes near the cottage, he finds the cottage gate open. Now the kind of person Dunstan is, he will not let this opportunity go just like that.
Section 3: The Robbery
So, Dunstan finds out about the wealth and gold of Silas Marner. When he takes all the gold from Silas's house in a bag, he rushes back to his home and stumbles upon something and falls down. On the other hand, Silas came back home and had dinner in the night. He went to check his gold and when he did not see it there, he panicked. He rushed to a local pub named Rainbow to ask for help from people there. He'd never asked for any help before. So, when he did, people gathered there to help him. But half of them thought some evil force took all his money and Silas got upset. Now people started getting close to Silas. Now imagine if a neighbor comes and tells you they lost all their money in a robbery, you will go and support them. The sympathy, empathy factor will make you closer to them. One of them was a lady named Dolly. She used to visit him frequently and a lot of villagers suggested that he go to the church. But he had lost all his faith as we know from his past story.
Section 4: Molly Dies
So, what happens is on the other side, Godfrey, when he came to know that Dunstan is missing and Wildfire, his horse died and he decided to tell everything to his father. He tells his father that his horse died. His father got angry about their financial situation. Due to his father's anger, he did not tell him about the marriage. So Dunstan had not come back yet, but no one linked Dunstan's disappearance and Silas' school. So guys, now there's a big party which is hosted at Red House, the big house of Squire Cass. Nancy was also there. She was looking very beautiful. Now friends, Nancy decided not to get married to Godfrey as he did not give her attention and time. But even after that, she dances with Godfrey and he tries to enjoy and make the best of this evening. Now Molly, with her daughter, was going to Red House to expose her and Godfrey's marriage. But friends, the problem is she has an opium addiction. She needs a dose of opium now. Due to the opium, cold and fatigue, she lies down on the snow near Silas' cottage because she saw some light there. Her daughter went to Marner's house, and the gate was now open. So she went and slept near the fireplace. Silas comes back to his home and sees something golden inside his house. He thinks somebody has returned his gold. He sees that the gold was her hair. He thinks where did this child come from? He sees outside his cottage and the dead body of Molly.
Section 5: Everyone comes to Silas' Cottage
He then goes to the Red House and makes everyone visit his cottage. The doctor there confirms that Molly is dead. Now Godfrey thinks that because of Molly's death, he can finally be with Nancy. He is not sad but happy. After this, he goes back to the party to find his happiness with Nancy. Now friend Silas Marner saw the child and decided to take care of the child. Who was this child? She was Molly's daughter and he named her Eppie. He now started connecting with other people also, especially with ladies. And friend Silas is so protective of Eppie that he does not let anyone touch her.
Section 6: Eppie gets married
He now started to take her for walks and attend church. Now we also see that he is getting attention from people. He wanted to do the best for his daughter, and he also gained the trust of the villagers. 16 years passed. Silas Marner became old and Eppie grew up to be a young beautiful girl. Dolly's son Aron proposed to Eppie, and they decided to get married. But even after marriage, she wanted to stay with her father Silas Marner. So guys let me tell you that Godfrey always used to check upon them and used to see if Silas was taking good care of Eppie or not. He used to help him whenever needed, even financially. He got married to Nancy, but they had no child. So he suggested let's adopt Eppie. But Nancy used to think that it is their destiny and if they adopt a child, it will be going against the will of God. So, what does this mean? This means that he did not tell her, yet that Molly was his wife and Eppie was his biological daughter.
Section 7: Dunstan if found
Now Dunstan is finally found. One Sunday, a twist comes. While farming, a farmer noticed that the water was finished to irrigate the lands. The stone pits there, they got emptied and a dead body was found there. Now this dead body was of Dunstan. Along with this dead body, the gold of Silas Marner was also found. Godfrey panicked and told all the truth to Nancy about what happened with Dunstan and who Molly and Eppie were. Now guys think about what would have come to Nancy's mind after knowing all this. Godfrey thought she would leave him. But on the contrary, she said, you could have told me earlier. We could have taken care of her and given her the best life.
Section 8: Eppie gets married
They both go to Silas Marner's cottage and offer him to take Eppie. Silas leaves everything to Eppie, but Eppie denies that she will not leave her father. Godfrey gets angry and shouts at them. She doesn't like it. Even after knowing all the truth, she denies her option and says, Nancy and Godfrey leave. Godfrey feels sad and thinks that his past sins are now being punished. Eppie gets married to Aron and all villagers celebrate the wedding. Eppie was wearing a beautiful white cotton gown. Everybody was enjoying and talking about how Silas Marnerr's life changed after this girl came to him and brought him blessings and pulled him out of despair And Silas thinks his gold coins came back to him in the form of Eppie, although he got his gold back as well. So after the wedding, they built a garden outside their home, which was Eppie's dream. And at the end of the story, Eppie also acknowledges that she and her father are the luckiest people in the world. So with this, the story ends.
